By Julie Silfverberg I don't know about you but I seem to be hearing more and more people talking about burnout. People in business, at work, in families. It is tough for the people going through burnout themselves and it is also tough for their families, colleagues and friends. How do you know you, a colleague or a family member is close to burnout? You know because they are "not themselves". During burnout you can feel; exhausted, helpless, trapped, irritable and quick to inappropriate anger, with that little voice in your head going "why bother". It is a scary, uncomfortable place. You might notice By Julie Silfverberg Your Business Roles You started your business, it has been growing and where are you now? You may find now you are very busy fulfilling all the roles in the company. In fact you might have no free time. You are working all the hours that God gives and it still doesn’t seem to be enough. Maybe business has plateaued and even beginning to slip backwards. Maybe you want to step up a gear but can’t find the time or the resources to make the gear shift. You know you are working in your business with no time at all to be able to step back and make decisions for the next stage of business development – to be able to work on the business. They believed once connections were made inside, that was it and there was no going back or changing. In fact they had surmised that over time the connectivity deteriorated. Happily for us in the last 10 to 15 years there has been a revolution in the thinking about the brain, akin to the discovery that the world is round and not flat! Through new imaging techniques it has been discovered the brain is highly plastic. What does this mean to you and me? Well it means that change need not be arduous or slow, it can in Written by Julie Silfverberg So tired Some years ago I was chatting to a friend who was working in France. He was telling me that there was no way he could leave the office before his boss, it just wasn’t the done thing. Needless to say I thought this was very interesting especially because he added that he really didn’t feel working this late was productive for him. So I asked “What would happen if you left before the boss?” he answered he didn’t know because nobody ever did. One of the things that particularly fascinated me was; at the time in France there was a 35 hour working week in place, supposedly. Culture is a powerful force and one which is often times not even reckoned with or questioned. When Written by Julie SIlfverberg According to a recent survey 90% of executives in UK organisations work with a coach. I suspect it is not nearly as high here in Ireland…..yet. In the UK coaching is used to fast track potential stars. It helps the executive recognise their strengths and build on them. Acknowledge their weaknesses and discover how to mitigate them. All the while paying attention to the path and holding the focus. For some people when they are stressed they may treat members of staff (without meaning to or being aware of it) in ways in which they may be treating themselves internally – by being highly critical, judgemental and harsh and with unrealistic expectations. Or if the behaviour has been long standing, this may be your style which may have worked in the past or been overlooked. Written by Julie Silfverberg ![]() Where is your focus? Do you want to start working on your business? Is all you time taken up each day running your business? Are you playing all the roles in the organisation from cleaner, mailman, facilities manager, sales and marketing person to CEO? Do you ever take the time to step back from your business look into the future and really plan your direction, make decisions and take actions based on those decisions that will lead you Written by Julie Silfverberg Coaching Top Women Executives The further up the organisation one goes the fewer and further between women are represented at top levels. In this situation a woman may choose not to discuss challenges with her peers because she may be perceived as being weak?
