A New Year - A New You
Goals are something everybody in Coaching & NLP talk about all the time.Sometimes people are reluctant to set goals almost as if they think they are setting themselves up to fail! And the funny thing is if you are not willing to fail your goals may be a bit 'wishy washy' - the sort that are not going to stretch you.
If they are not stretching you, you might find they are not very exciting or motivating either. You might even wonder well what is the point!
So setting a goal is a finely balanced point between being in the comfort zone - the 'ho-hum' slightly bored -yawn - place and the 'aaaagh' overwhelm of the rabbit-in-the-headlights stuck place.
So you are looking for a goal that stretches and excites you and gets your motivation all revved up. The let me at it place. Then you know you are going to take action, do what ever it takes and go all out to achieve this goal. Knowing even if you don't achieve your goal this time you did everything you could. You learned a lot on the way. You didn't fail because you know you are closer and you know so much more now.
Interesting.....
Suggestion alert!
For the next month experiment:
First of all learn to notice when you consider a goal;
- Are you aware of your emotions in relation to this goal.
- If you are aware; what are they?
- 'Ho-hum'
- 'Aaagh' or
- 'Oh! That's a bit of a stretch'?
Second ask yourself some questions:
- If you were to fail at this goal what is the worst thing that could happen? Could you live with that?
- If you were to fail at this goal what can you learn from it. How would that benefit you?
- How easy is it for you to accept failure as a normal natural element within the learning cycle. Think Edison and the light bulb. Think about a child learning to walk. Forget school's concept....just let that go.
Just experiment, play with it and discover what happens. I'd love to know....
Have fun and enjoy.
